Original Medicare: Parts A & B

Original Medicare is the federal health insurance program made up of Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance).

Part A — Hospital Insurance

Helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health services. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.

Part B — Medical Insurance

Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services and durable medical equipment. Part B has a standard monthly premium and an annual deductible.

What it doesn't cover

Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage (Part D), routine dental, vision or hearing care, and it has no out-of-pocket maximum. Many beneficiaries pair it with a Medicare Supplement and a Part D plan.
