PPO

I show how PPO plans give you flexibility with in- and out-of-network care.

What PPO can teach you

How PPOs work

A PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) lets you see any doctor or specialist — in or out of network — usually without a referral. You'll pay less when you stay in network, but you keep the freedom to go elsewhere.

Who PPOs fit best

PPOs are a good fit if you travel, split time between states, or want to keep a specialist who isn't in a narrow HMO network. The flexibility comes with a premium that's typically higher than an HMO.

Watch the out-of-pocket maximum

PPOs often have two out-of-pocket maximums: one for in-network and a higher one combining in- and out-of-network care. Knowing both protects you from surprises.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see a specialist?

Usually no. PPOs let you go directly to a specialist, in or out of network.

Is out-of-network care fully covered?

It's covered, but your share of the cost is higher than in-network. We review the actual numbers with you.

PPO or HMO — which is better?

Neither is universally better. It depends on your doctors, how often you travel, and your budget. We compare them side-by-side.
